Authorities say 76-year-old George E. Bradfield was arrested in connection to the 1984 murder of Lisa Carnes in rural Massac County, Illinois.
State’s Attorney Josh Stratemeyer announced the new information in a Friday press conference.
The 26-year-old Carnes was shot and left for dead in a rural field in Massac County on March 30, 1984.
Over the last 42 years, her family was left with lingering questions about the identity of her killer. A suspect was never identified or charged, leaving this a cold case and justice unserved.
The investigation led law enforcement to evidence implicating Bradfield in the crime. Stratemeyer said that Bradfield was believed to be employed in the small town of Joppa, Illinois at the time of the murder.
Bradfield is currently in custody at the Daviess County Detention Center in Owensboro, indicted by a grand jury and charged with five counts of murder.
Stratemeyer thanked the Owensboro Police Department for all their help in this case.
Stratemeyer was unable to divulge specific facts or evidentiary information. Further details regarding the case will be released as appropriate.
