A Louisville man is facing multiple felony charges after police said he held a woman and child captive in an apartment.
Markel Swan, 24, was arraigned Saturday morning following his arrest on a warrant stemming from an August 7 incident.
According to court records, Louisville Metro Police responded to a report that an overnight verbal altercation on South First Street turned violent.
Records state that Swan locked the victims in a bedroom and repeatedly shoved the woman back inside when she tried to leave.
Police said that Swan then forced the woman into multiple rooms before shoving her into a bathroom and a bathtub. Once in the tub, Swan allegedly struck, kicked and attempted to strangle her.
According to the arrest citation, the altercation continued until about 5 a.m., during which Swan confiscated the woman’s phone, accused her of trying to set him up with “the ops,” and brandished a handgun to hold her at gunpoint to prevent her from escaping.
When Swan left the apartment, the woman called police and reported that she had scratches across her neck, face and arms, as well as nausea and head pain.
While officers assisted the woman in obtaining an emergency protective order, she alerted police that Swan had returned and parked outside the apartment building.
When an officer approached his vehicle with emergency lights activated and ordered him to exit, Swan reversed, accelerated and fled northbound on South First Street, according to the complaint.
Officers pursued Swan’s vehicle as it accelerated at a high speed, ran traffic signals and drove into oncoming traffic before officers lost sight of the car.
Police later found the vehicle abandoned on South Brook Street with the victim’s apartment keys inside.
Authorities noted Swan did not have a valid driver’s license, the vehicle lacked license plates, and Swan was a convicted felon legally barred from possessing firearms.
Swan faces 10 charges:
Two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment
First-degree strangulation (domestic violence-related)
Fourth-degree assault (domestic violence with minor injury)
Second-degree unlawful imprisonment
Intimidating a participant in the legal process
Possession of a handgun by a convicted felon
First-degree fleeing or evading police (motor vehicle)
Third-degree terroristic threatening
Reckless driving
Prosecutors asked for an increase in his $75,000 bond. The judge decided to maintain the bond amount as full cash, with conditions including home incarceration if posted, no contact with the victim or location of the offense, and no further violations of the law.
Court records indicate Swan was also held at the Clark County Jail in Jeffersonville on related charges.
