A decade-old cold case investigation led to an indictment and arrest in the 2014 killing of Donesha McStoots, according to authorities.
Deandre McElroy was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Louisville Metro Police Department Fugitive Unit following coordination with Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office detectives. A Bullitt County grand jury recently indicted McElroy on charges of first-degree murder, assault, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and tampering with physical evidence. McElroy had previously been arrested for the crime but had been released.
On May 9, 2014, McStoots was discovered near the entrance of the Knob Creek Gun Range suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the back. Officials reported she was partially unclothed and had been exposed to sulfuric acid. A bystander transported her to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Investigators originally charged McElroy with the murder in 2015, but a District Court judge later dismissed those charges without prejudice. In 2026, detectives reopened and reviewed the case files and evidence alongside the Bullitt County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office before presenting the findings to a grand jury.
Investigators have been unable to reach McStoots’ family and ask relatives to contact the Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office at 502-543-2514.
