A 30-year-old mother was arrested Thursday by Louisville police after allegedly shaking her baby and causing near-fatal injuries.
Louisville Metro Police said Marisela Hernandez Rios was charged with assault and criminal abuse/neglect of a child younger than 13.
Court documents state a child was taken to Norton Children’s Hospital after not breathing.
Hernandez Rios told hospital staff her child was on a “Boppy pillow” and was limp when she turned her over.
Doctors found multiple brain bleeds, retinal hemorrhages in both eyes and bruising to the hips.
The child also had scabbing behind both ears, and doctors said the child was “very dirty” when the child was admitted.
Court documents state doctors had to perform lifesaving surgery “due to the near-fatal injuries the baby endured during the assault.”
Police said Hernandez Rios admitted to Child Protective Services that she shook the baby and demonstrated it with a stuffed animal.
Hernandez Rios was arraigned in court Friday, and her bond was set at $250,000. Her next court appearance is scheduled for October 2.
