A Louisville woman was arrested Saturday night after police say she abandoned her two children and then tried to drive off while impaired before crashing into a nearby ditch.
Lisa Burgess, 42, is facing seven charges, including endangering the welfare of a minor, reckless driving, and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence (other substance or combination), according to court documents.
Around 9 p.m., Louisville Metro Police responded to the Menards at 9625 Preston Crossing on a report of children left alone, according to arrest records.
Upon arrival, an officer made contact with two juvenile children who said their mother and father had left them behind and were not coming back.
According to arrest records, the responding officer made contact with their mother, Lisa Burgess, and ordered her to return and pick up her children.
Using location tracking services on one of the children’s phones, police say that Burgess arrived at the Wawa gas station next to the Menards, remained stationary for a moment, then began driving away.
Police said Burgess began driving northbound on Cooper Chapel Road and onto nearby Hackberry Way, where she was later located by police.
Prior to the officer activating his overhead lights after locating her, police say Burgess drove her car off the road and into a small ditch in front of a house on Hackberry Way.
According to her arrest citation, as Burgess was removed from her vehicle, the arresting officer says he detected the smell of burnt marijuana and saw numerous open packages containing suspected marijuana.
Afterwards, police then conducted multiple field sobriety tests on Burgess, who showed signs of impairment. She was placed under arrest around 11 p.m., according to her arrest citation.
Once at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, a drug evaluation of Burgess was conducted and she showed multiple indicators of impairment under the influence of cannabis, according to arrest records.
Burgess is expected in court for her arraignment on September 28.
