A 22-year-old man is facing felony charges after police said he fired a gun during an altercation at a Louisville apartment building in the Taylor-Berry Neighborhood in June.
Devin R. Mercado is charged with three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment and one count of possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, according to Jefferson District Court records.
According to an arrest affidavit, Louisville Metro Police officers responded to a report of a shooting June 19. Investigators said two women were involved in a verbal altercation on a stairwell landing between the first and second floors of an apartment building when Mercado appeared.
Police allege Mercado placed a snub-nose style revolver to the back of one of the women’s heads. As the women backed away, Mercado allegedly fired one round into a nearby wall, creating a substantial risk of death or serious injury, according to court documents.
Mercado then fled the scene. A witness provided a statement to responding officers, and detectives later confirmed Mercado’s identity through investigative measures, according to the affidavit.
Police also allege Mercado is a convicted felon from Florida and is prohibited from owning or possessing firearms.
Mercado was arraigned October 2 in Jefferson District Court, where he pleaded not guilty and a public defender was appointed to represent him, according to court records.
A judge set bond at $25,000 cash with conditions including no contact with victims and witnesses, no possession of firearms or other weapons, and home incarceration program eligibility if posted, according to court records.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. October 12.
