Over the past few days, a phone scam has been occurring within the Meade County RECC system territory. These fraudulent calls have been targeting commercial accounts, but they could change their focus to residential member-consumers. If so, be aware of suspicious calls that could be perpetrating Meade County employees.
The scam artist has been notifying member-consumers that a termination of electric service will occur due to an unpaid account. Consequently, according to the scam artist, the only way to avoid this cut-off in electric service is to purchase a prepaid credit card from a local retailer and pay over the phone.
It is the policy of Meade County RECC to send all member-consumers a written warning notice should an account become delinquent. They also accept a variety of payment options not just one form of payment unlike the explanation the scam artist is stating.
The company is locally owned by the member-consumers in their service territory and the corporate headquarters is located in Brandenburg, Kentucky. They also have local offices in Hardinsburg and Brandenburg that you can always come visit to pay your electric bill.
Office hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. EST. All administrative functions, such as billing payment options, application of service, transfer/disconnection of services, etc would only be done during those hours.
If you believe you encountered a fraudulent call please contact one of their offices so your account information can be verified or call the local law enforcement.
