Three weeks after the sudden death of a 16-year-old Kentucky girl, friends and family say they need to know what happened.
Gynnya McMillen died at the Lincoln Village Juvenile Detention Center in Elizabethtown while in custody for less than 30 hours.
She was admitted to the detention center on January 10 and less than 30 hours later, investigators say she was discovered dead in her room.
A preliminary autopsy did not reveal a cause of death. Investigators are waiting for toxicology results which could take 8 weeks.
The staff at the detention center say McMillen was monitored throughout the night of her stay. However, an employee has been placed on administrative leave for failing to complete the 15-minute visual checks.
McMillen’s family hired attorney Ron Hillerich on Friday who says something isn’t right and it’s his job to help the family find out what went wrong.
The Kentucky State Police and the Justice Cabinet’s Internal Investigations branch are both investigating the case while the Department of Juvenile Justice is reviewing the personnel conduct.
