Kentucky U.S. Senator and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell spoke to several area business leaders and residents during visits in Meade and Breckinridge Counties on Tuesday (10/30).
The Senator visited with community members and students of the Meade County College and Career Readiness Center in Brandenburg. He then made a second stop to speak at a luncheon held by Friends of Rough River at the Rough River Dam State Resort Lodge.
The Republican Leader addressed the recent passage and signature of a water infrastructure bill that ordered the Corps of Engineers to stop charging fees to property owners around the lake for re-surveying land around the lake and reimburse those owners who had to pay as much as $4,000. Local leaders thanked the Senator and Congressman Brett Guthrie, who was also in attendance, for efforts to include the provisions. President Trump signed the America’s Water Infrastructure Bill into law earlier in the month after Congressional approval.
Among other topics of conversation, Senator McConnell also addressed the recent confirmation battle involving Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, which became mired in hearing over alleged sexual misconduct and reaction from opponents of the nomination. He also addressed the reaction and other violence, including lawmakers being accosted by protesters, the recent mailing of bomb to Democrats, and attacks at the Kroger store in Louisville and synagogue in Pittsburgh, saying such acts are not part of mainstream America or lawmakers in Washington.
McConnell’s visits come exactly one week before voters cast votes in the upcoming general election on November 6. McConnell expressed caution, saying that several races in the Senate mid term, including those involving Republican-held seats, were still tightly contested.
