
Members of Meade County Fiscal Court worked through a lengthy agenda during their regular meeting Tuesday (9/13) night.
The court went straight into the business session after no public comments were offered. Magistrates approved the health insurance rates for 2023 as presented by John Beavin. Beavin said that the plans for the upcoming year had additional preventative programs included and the rate was a 6.95 percent increase over the current year.
Judge Executive Leslie Stith read proclamations for Meade County Extension Homemakers Association and Constitution Weeks. The court approved the appointments of Brian Board to the Battletown Fire Protection District Board, Michelle Miller and Megan Stith were appointed to Public Library Board of Trustees. Ben Sheeran was appointed to the Board of Adjustments to fill the vacancy made by Jessie Mills, who resigned. Fiscal Court removed Guy Garcia as Interim Planning and Zoning Coordinator and reappointed him to the Planning and Zoning Commission.
In other business, county leaders approved the 2022 Extension Board tax rates of 3.1 cents per $100 on real property, 6.4 cents per $100 on personal property, and 3.5 cents for motor vehicles. Magistrates approved a contract with Harrison County to move forward on a engineering study for a new grain facility at a cost of $160,000. The study is next needed item to obtain permitting with the Army Corps of Engineers for project to be developed along the Ohio River near Mauckport, Indiana. Attorneys for each government body are working through the details to create a board to over see the facility and secure bonding on the project which is expected to be managed by Archer-Daniels-Midland Company.
Fiscal Court approved a PILOT bonds lease and donation from Nucor Brandenburg to the county on a 20 acre site at 800 Mooreman Road. The site is a parcel of land that is being traded allow the county to move the current burn pile along with the county Animal Shelter and Road Department. The City of Brandenburg is planning to construct a water tower on the site as well. The county is currently seeking bids for logging efforts to clear the site of the timber for pulp or logs.
Magistrates discussed and voted to approve a new maintenance building for the County Parks Department at a low bid cost of $423,000 by Prodigy Construction. The building will feature additional restrooms for staff and public and a a storm shelter area for staff at Meade Olin Park. The current building is primitive and would take more add the original addition. The County will use ARPA funds to construct the new building.
The court approve $46,192.65 for blacktopping the remain section of Buttermilk Falls Road. The section will about 678 feet in length and 8 feet wide. The court voted to purchase a new backhoe for the county Solid Waste & Recycling Center at a cost of $103,191.62. They opted to enter into a government two year lease program where they will be required to front $50,000 and lease to own the remainder of the balance.
At the recommendation of the Meade County Sheriff’s Department, magistrates voted to set the speed limit to 25 miles per hour on Bethel Church Road. The court approved funding requests from Rhodelia Fire Department of $15,000; $8,000 to the Wolf Creek Fire Department and $3,500 to the Meade County Fire Fighters Fire School.
