Council Worked Through Changes

The Brandenburg City Council worked through several changes during their regular meeting Monday (12/11) night.

At the beginning of the meeting, Meade County Fire Protection District Chief Chris Crawford read and presented a proclamation designating Mayor Bryan Claycomb as Fire Chief Emertis Meade County Distict. Claycomb served as fire chief of the department from 1976 until 1993.

During the business agenda, the council approved the second reading of a Planning and Zoning ordinance related to zoning change of the Convent building at St. John Catholic Church. The building is being fitted to become apartments. The council also approved the resignation of Lee Klocklow as City Planning and Zoning Administrator. Mayor Claycomb and council members thanked Klocklow for his service and dedication to the city and the many positions that held with the city’s planning and zoning during 32 years. Mayor Claycomb recommended Bethany Carr to fill the position of Planning and Zoning Administrator. She currently held the Assistant Planning and Zoning Administrator over the past year and half.

The council discussed options related to a private sewer line for newly annexed property along 313 owned by Newcomb Oil. Mayor Claycomb said that company is planning to begin construction on a new Five Star fuel station. He said that the main condition has been in the plans is for the Mike Jones property to have access to the line which will be constructed by Newcomb. The company has been granted permission to connect to the city sewer system. The system would include a pump lift station to bring the flow into the system. After some discussion the council approved an option that requests a minimum of a four inch diameter line and the city’s sewer fee be based upon the facility’s metered water usage. The property for the property is supplied by the Meade County Water District.

Mayor Claycomb said that he had signed a paperwork supporting a grant for water erosion mitigation study that was discovered by the County’s grant writer. The council could receive up to $100,000 for the study that would analyze the repairs needed for the river bank erosion in the River Front Park. Mayor Claycomb said the estimate cost of repairs could be in around $450,000 to possibly meet the Army Corps of Engineers specifications.

At the end of the meeting, the council accepted Mayor Bryan Claycomb’s resignation effective December 31. Claycomb said that life changes and this was something that he had not anticipated when to ran for the Mayor’s office. City Attorney Jessica Brown Roberts outlined what the council needed to do in the appointment process. The council made two candidate nominations of David Pace and Bruce Fackler. Once the nominations were approved, the council went into closed session to discuss the appointment. The met with each of the nominees and the returned to regular session for the vote. A result of a secret ballot vote, the council voted 4 to 1 in favor of David Pace. He will take the position to fill the remainder of the term.
