Wednesday (4/3) marked the 50th anniversary of the April 3, 1974 Tornado Super Outbreak. Memories of that day are forever etched into the memory of those witnessed the death and destruction on the fateful Wednesday afternoon.
In Brandenburg, the community filled the sanctuary of First Baptist Church to remembered the 31 people, who died as a result of the F5 tornado which destroyed the heart of the thriving river town. At exactly 4:08 pm, those gathered observed a moment silence to remember each of the victims at the exact moment when the tornado ripped the building of previous Philips Memorial Church that sat upon the same location.
The service was comprised mostly of survivors, who had witnessed the tornado and worked during the weeks and months of recovery to rebuild the community. Some speakers spoke about the developments of technology which has improved preparedness for severe weather events.
