The Daviess County Sheriff’s Department officials say a victim involved in a shooting Thursday died shortly after being taken to the hospital.
According to a press release, the victim has been identified as 38-year-old Anthony Scott Smalls.
Smalls was shot one time in the chest at close range by a handgun.
The shooting was reported around 8 p.m. on Thursday in the 100 block of Saint Anthony Road off of US Highway 431 in Brown’s Valley.
Crews on scene worked to save the Smalls’ life.
He was taken to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, where they eventually died.
An autopsy determined the bullet hit Smalls’ heart, aorta, small bit of lung and lodged into his spine.
Deputies later identified the suspect involved in the shooting as 57 year-old Darrin Ray Carter of Owensboro.
Detectives have determined that Smalls did not live at the residence but was visiting at the time of the shooting and was shot as the homeowner opened the door upon the victim arriving.
Officials say following the shooting, Carter attempted to hide the firearm on a neighboring property before returning to the scene prior to deputies arriving.
They say it doesn’t appear there was an altercation preceding the shooting.
Carter is being charged with 2nd Degree Manslaughter, Possession of a Handgun by a Convicted Felon and Tampering with Physical Evidence.
He is being held in the Daviess County Detention Center under a $10,000 cash bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, July 2.
