An escaped Kentucky inmate is back behind bars thanks to the public’s help.
The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office said they received a tip Wednesday night that 28-year-old Jarod Barnes, the escaped inmate, was in the 500 block of Locust Street in New Haven, Kentucky.
Police arrived at the home and searched it. They didn’t find Barnes, but noted that the attic access door appeared “disturbed,” according to court documents. Police also noticed some of Barnes’ belongings were in the home.
After leaving the home, police received another tip that Barnes was hiding in the home’s attic. Police went to the home a second time and searched it, finding Barnes and arresting him.
Barnes was wanted by Kentucky State Police after he walked away from the Bluegrass Career and Development Center in Madison County near Lexington Sunday night.
He was serving a sentence for drug trafficking and engaging in organized crime. Now, he is facing an additional charge of escape.
Kaitlin Smithson, of New Haven, was in the home when Barnes was found. Smithson was also arrested, charged with hindering prosecution or apprehension.
Both are being held at the Nelson County Correctional Center.
