Authorities arrested three people Thursday; two of them are allegedly connected to a fatal shooting that happened in April, and the third was for drug related charges.
Louisville Metro Police said they arrested 22 year-old Maurice Heard around 4:30 p.m. in the 900 block of Esquire Alley, and stopped a vehicle in the area of Lentz and Strader Avenues around the same time.
Esquire Alley is in the Russell neighborhood while Lentz and Strader Avenues are in the Jacobs neighborhood.
Police arrested the two people in the car after about a 30 minute standoff, according to authorities.
The passenger was identified as 38 year-old Lawon Bartlett, and police identified the driver as 41 year-old Joseph Coggins.
These arrests also resulted in the recovery of a firearm, money and a “significant amount” of fentanyl, cocaine and ecstasy, according to the investigators.
Police were called to the area of West Chestnut Street and Dr. WJ Hodge for a shooting on April 13, around 8:30 p.m. When they arrived, police said they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds while inside of a vehicle.
The victim, who police identified as Wayne Woods, later died at the hospital, according to authorities.
During Louisville Metro Police Department’s investigation, they found Woods was being followed by a stolen black Dodge Durango, driven by Heard, and a blue Dodge Ram, driven by Coggins, according to the arrest citations. Surveillance video showed the Durango pull up next to Woods at a stoplight, then a passenger got out and started shooting into the victim’s truck.
Phone records showed Coggins was on the phone with Heard at the time of the shooting, the citation showed. The Ram then followed the Durango away from the scene to where the Durango was discarded on East Washington Street. Coggins returned hours later to move it to where police would eventually find it.
Heard is charged with murder, possession of a handgun by a prohibited person and violation of EPO/DVO.
Coggins is charged with murder, three counts of trafficking in a controlled substance and resisting arrest.
Bartlett is charged with three counts of trafficking in a controlled substance and resisting arrest.
