
Kentucky State Police has confirmed a suspect is dead and a trooper injured following a shooting and a standoff in Fayette County.
Kentucky State Police said the incident unfolded Sunday just after 11:30 a.m. when a trooper had pulled over a vehicle on Terminal Drive. The suspect then carjacked a vehicle in the 3700 block of Belleau Wood Drive and fled the area. No injuries were reported during the carjacking.
The suspect had made his way to Richmond Road Baptist Church in the 5800 block of Old Richmond Road.
That is when police said the man had fired his weapon at individuals on the church’s property. In their preliminary investigation, police believe the man may have had a connection to the individuals at the church.
Lexington Police said two men and two women were shot on the property. The two women died at the scene while the two men were taken to the hospital. One sustained critical injuries while the other is in stable condition.
The suspect was shot by police responding to the scene.
Lexington Police Department said the suspect’s identity will be released after their family has been notified.
Attorney General Russell Coleman said detective’s with the Attorney General’s Department of Criminal Investigations will be on standby to support the agencies in their investigation.
The three officers who fired their service weapons during the incident will be on administrative assignment following an investigation by the Lexington Police Department’s Public Integrity Unit.
