A Louisville woman accused of attacking her 6-year-old daughter with a hammer was indicted by a grand jury Tuesday (08/05).
Zeinab Abdi, 40, was arrested June 19. Louisville Metro Police had responded to a home on Wilson Avenue around 12:45 p.m. on a report that a 6-year-old girl was hit in the head with a hammer by her mother, Abdi.
Police said the child was found unconscious with trauma to her head and taken to Norton Children’s Hospital in critical condition. Due to the severity of the child’s injuries, LMPD’s Homicide Unit was assigned to investigate the case.
Louisville Metro Police Department said the girl was discharged from the hospital Tuesday and is now with family.
Abdi was arraigned on charges of attempted murder and domestic violence in court June 20, following her arrest. She pleaded not guilty, and the judge set her bond at $500,000.
Tuesday, Abdi was indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury on criminal charges of attempted murder, assault and criminal abuse of a victim under 12 years old.
Abdi will be arraigned on the indictment at 9 a.m. Monday, August 11, in Jefferson County Circuit Court.
According to Abdi’s June 19 arrest citation, she said she “frequently becomes extremely angry and has difficulty controlling herself.”
Police said she admitted to investigators she couldn’t control her anger, and struck the girl “in the head with a hammer for an unknown amount of times.”
Her son told police while he was restraining his mother, she told him “let me finish her” while trying to go back to the girl, according to court documents.
