The first BlueOval SK battery to be sold to a customer rolled off the assembly line at the first Glendale plant Tuesday, August 19.
That milestone comes almost four years after the announcement where Governor Andy Beshear and company leaders celebrated the $5.8 billion investment. Batteries at the plant will go into the all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning trucks.
Beshear, SK On and Ford Motor Company announced plans to build two electric battery plants in Glendale in September 2021. Officials broke ground on the site near I-65 in late 2022 and a groundbreaking for a $25 million BlueOval SK Training Center at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College in May 2023.
So far, over 1,450 of the expected 5,000 jobs created by the plant have been filled. Those employees gathered on the plant’s campus to celebrate the launch.
The production news also comes shortly after Ford announced a $2 billion investment at the Louisville Assembly Plant to produce an electric mid-sized pickup truck.
