An arrest at a Jefferson County courthouse Thursday afternoon has escalated into a federal investigation, according to officials.
Hunter Byrnes was arrested Thursday afternoon on 124 counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument in the first degree.
According to a spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Byrnes was arrested inside while appearing in court for an unrelated case.
In his arrest citation, authorities said Byrnes pulled out a large amount of cash from his pocket while placing his belongings in a bag to be processed inside the courthouse.
The citation said a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy suspected most of the money was counterfeit. The deputy discovered that Byrnes had $300 in legitimate cash and $9,200 in counterfeit currency.
Officials noted the fake bills lacked micro-printing, fibers, or other security features.
The sheriff’s office said Byrnes case has been escalated into a federal investigation conducted by the U.S. Secret Service.
Byrnes is expected to be arraigned in court on Friday at 9 a.m.
