A man is dead after being shot by police in Danville Sunday night.
Danville dispatch received a 911 call around 9:30 p.m. on January 11 reporting a suicidal man with a knife at Center Estates Apartments, according to police.
The caller told dispatch the man was claiming to be harming himself and had sent photos of his injuries to the caller through social media.
Officers went to the apartment to check on the man’s safety and breached the door in an attempt to provide aid. Police say they made contact with 29-year-old Cody Downey from outside the home and repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife.
Instead, Downey exited the apartment holding the knife and charged toward officers, knocking one officer to the ground, according to police.
An officer then fired his weapon, striking Downey in the chest. EMS transported him to Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, where he died a short time later.
The officer involved, a 10-year law enforcement veteran, has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
Kentucky State Police is now investigating the shooting.
