The Kentucky legislative session is in full swing in Frankfort with a residential safe room bill being approved by the senate.
Senate Bill 11 was given the green light Thursday by the Senate Veterans, Military Affairs and Public Protection Committee.
The bill’s sponsor, Senator Stephen Meredith, a Republican from Leitchfield, said the proposed residential safe room rebate program would minimize deaths associated with growing tornadic activity throughout the commonwealth.
To qualify, the safe rooms would need to meet FEMA’s standards, and homeowners must agree to open their safe rooms to others in the community during emergencies.
Meredith said the price tag can be near $10,000 for some of the ten-by-ten steel structures.
