A new Kentucky law already in effect is changing when drivers must stop for school and church buses, and police are reminding motorists of the rules ahead of the back-to-school season.
Kentucky House Bill 7 took effect July 15. The law allows school districts to install cameras on bus stop arms and changes stopping requirements for drivers on multi-lane roads.
Under the previous law, drivers traveling on highways with four or more lanes did not have to stop for a school bus if they were traveling in the opposite direction.
Now motorists have to stop for a school or church bus on any highway unless there is an elevated barrier or unpaved median.
According to the law, drivers who fail to stop face a $300 fine for a first-time offense. Subsequent violations carry a $500 fine.
The law applies to church buses as well as school buses. Church buses may operate on weekends or throughout the week for special events.
