A fire destroyed a Fern Creek home and claimed the lives of two dogs Wednesday night.
Fern Creek Fire Chief Mike Schmidt said the call came in around 8 p.m. as a possible lighting strike but arson investigators are still investigating the cause of the fire.
Schmidt said it was a challenging fire for 50 firefighters and several fire departments who worked through the night to put it out. The floor collapsed and made it difficult for firefighters to enter the home. Several hot spots continued burning through the early morning on Christmas Eve.
No one was home at the time of the fire and not injuries were reported.
Despite not having a home on Christmas, the owners said they are thankful they are safe and together.
