A Western Kentucky family of five died after its vehicle was swept off the road by flood waters in about 60 miles east of St. Louis, Illinois on Saturday night.
The family from Todd County was traveling to visit relatives in Minnesota when their vehicle got stranded in high water in Marion County, Illinois.
Police say a 911 call came from the family’s vehicle around 7:30 p.m.
Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon said the small country road they went through would normally be a low-water crossing, but with the swollen creeks and waterways the water was apparently deeper than what they anticipated.
It took first-responders more than four hours to get the car out of the water. By that time it was too late for the family.
