Owensboro Municipal Utilities is ditching coal and now looking for a new way to power Owensboro.
The commission voted to retire the Elmer Smith Station during a recent meeting. OMU officials say this will be a big change for the area. OMU’s been burning coal for the past 116 years, but by 2023, that will no longer be the case.
This was all laid out in the Integrated Resource Plan. Officials say that coal isn’t proving to be the lowest viable cost option which benefits the company and the customers. Commissioners voted to retire the Elmer Smith plant and start looking at other power supply alternatives. This came as great news to Sierra Club members in the meeting who say closing the plant will mean safer air for those living in the Owensboro.
OMU’s next step will be researching which alternative will be their next way to power Owensboro.
