
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet hosted a public meeting to learn issues and gain the public’s opinion on issues along Kentucky 86 in Hardin and Breckinridge Counties.
On Monday (6/12) local highway officials along with company officials with Stantec Consulting Services talked with residents at Franklin Crossroads Baptist Church regarding 19 locations along the 26 mile stretch between US Highways 60 & 62. The purpose of the study is to safer enhanced regional mobility across the most direct connection between Hardinsburg and Elizabethtown.
During a presentation, Brian Aldridge of Stantec Consulting Services explained the need of the study and what kind of spot improvements were being considered along the route. He said that a rebuild project was not a possibility due to cost already is estimated near $150 million. State funding could be available for several spot improvements where safety concerns and high volume of single vehicle accidents have been documented. 18 of the 72 horizontal curves, do not meet modern road standards, while 160 of the 242 vertical curves have sight distance issues.
The study has identified at least 19 locations for improvements. Aldridge said that some study related improvements will begin as soon as next month in Breckinridge County near Cave Hollow Lane. According to traffic data, 1,700 to 4,100 vehicles per day west to east travel the 26 miles road across the two counties.
Attendees were asked to talk with transportation officials at the meeting and fill out a survey form along with marking posters of each proposed project. A second identical meeting is scheduled for Monday (6/19) at Custer Elementary School from 5 until 7 pm CDT.
