The Hardin County Coroner’s Office has identified a Pennsylvania woman as the person shot to death last week near Rineyville.
Jessica Kelly, 43, who lived in and around Lancaster, Pennsylvania, died early Thursday morning inside a Custer Street home after being shot.
Richard Allen Cook, 42 of Radcliff, has been charged in the shooting. He is being held in lieu of a $150,000 cash bond in the Hardin County Detention Center and is scheduled to appear Friday in Hardin District Court.
He was arrested about an hour after a caller reported the shooting to a 911 operator around 4:15 a.m.
Cook is charged with murder-domestic violence and tampering with physical evidence.
According to an arrest citation, Cook told deputies that he shot the woman as he attempted to hand her the handgun. He said he later threw the gun away while driving on U.S. 31W.
Hardin County Sheriff John Ward said the shooting occurred at the residence of Cook’s grandmother, who was at home at the time.
After the shooting, Cook left the residence in a Dodge Durango, according to the citation. The vehicle was found in a parking lot of a motel on Buffalo Creek Drive in Elizabethtown.
Evidence related to the shooting was found in the motel parking lot as well as a trash can near the motel entrance, according to the citation.
Murder-domestic violence is a Class A felony punishable by 20 to 50 years in prison, or life in prison, if convicted, and tampering with physical evidence is a Class D felony punishable by one to five years in prison, if convicted.
