
Members of the Brandenburg City Council voted down a rezoning request on property on Hillcrest Drive during their regular meeting Monday (11/14) night.
At the beginning of the meeting, Mayor Ronnie Joyner asked those in the audience for the rezoning topic for their name and in they were for or against the request. The council began the discussion and Councilman Bryan Claycomb made a motion in favor of the 1st reading of the ordinance which failed due to a lack of second. As the discussion continued, City Attorney Rachel Brown pointed out if the council did nothing further, the request of the Planning and Zoning Commission would automatically become law if no action was taken by the council. After a short discussion, Councilman Bradley Johnston made a motion to reject the commission’s request. The council voted 5 to 1 in favor which denied the Planning and Zoning Request. The council also heard and approved the second reading of an ordinance related to a rezoning request on Hester Lane.
In other business, Industrial Authority Chairman David Pace presented the council with a refund check of $1,796 from the water line project along Kentucky 933 at Miller Welding. Pace said the work allowed the water system to be expanded across Ky 933 if needed in the future. He also encouraged council members to begin thinking about areas of Brandenburg for future industrial zoning. He said the Authority is currently showing property in the county and within the city, but the city property tracts are small sized lots. He said that he would seek further conversation after the new year on the issue. Pace reported Nucor now has 423 employees and about 1400 contractor workers at the facility which is believed to be the peak of the construction phase of the project. He said two additional companies have located at Nucor which adds and additional 140 workers. Site work continues for the new Eddie Kane Steel Rolling facility on Mooreman Road. The building is expected to begin construction just after the first of the year.
The city council got a preview of this year’s Christmas By The River event which begins on Saturday, November 26. Event Coordinator Shannon Stull said the afternoon will have various performances along with an iceless skating rink, giant snow globe, gingerbread and Santa bounce houses, pictures with Santa, and several food trucks and local vendors. She said that back parking lot would be used for most of the activities and parking would be on the old soccer field and then trolleys would be available from the courthouse and Meade County High School. The event begins at 2 pm and the lights come on with a fireworks display at dark. Sixteen new sponsors have been added to the event this year.
Public Works Director TJ Hughes reported to the council the ongoing manganese issue in the city water is continuing to get better. The city received a new filtration system to combat the issue but will have to construct a permanent solution in the near future. The readings within the passed week have already shown drastic improvements and state officials who are working with the city say the numbers will continue to improve as the new system is used. The city is waiting for engineers to provide a plan for the council to review.
Mayor Ronnie Joyner reported that funding for the new downtown sidewalk project has been approved. He is waiting for the paper work to be complete before the work can begin. He also asked the council to approve his appointment of Shannon Stull as the ABC Control Officer for the city. She has been working on training and the already working to assist with the position. Council voted unanimously in favor of he request. The council approved a one time $1,000 salary adjustment for city employees.
