A standing room only crowd attended a public meeting Tuesday night at Rough River Dam State Resort Park for updates related to the Army Corps of Engineers plans to preserve the life of the Rough River Dam pending repairs.
Corps officials will target a summer pool elevation of 490 feet, which is 5 feet below normal summer pool, until long-term repairs to the dam can be completed. Additionally, the lake will operate on a delayed fill schedule, beginning the rise of the summer pool from March 15th to April 1st. Will Ailstock, the project manager for the Rough Dam Safety Project, said the classification of the Dam’s situation was upgraded after a recent study.
The lower pool level will cause issues for property owners who have docks on the lake. Diane Stratton, Rough River Project Manager, said some modifications are allowed.
Stratton said most of the adjustments would have be taken case by case. Any adjustments would have to be removed once the project is completed. She also stressed for visitors, who only visit during the summer months, to slow down and re-learn the lake in order to avoid obstructions not normally found on the lake. The project is awaiting funding to be released for bids and is expected to take about 6 years for completion once work begins.
Residents with questions may call the Corps of Engineers Office at 270-257-2061. For more information on the safety modification project click here.
