The Charles W. McDowell Center for the Blind in Louisville will hold an open house on July 26, 2023, to celebrate its newly renovated residential facility.
The facility is located at 8412 Westport Road, Louisville, KY and the open house hours will be from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. EDT.
The open house will feature tours of the new dorms, assistive technology demonstrations and interaction with staff and students. The 44,000-square-foot center provides specialized services to Kentuckians with visual disabilities who want to learn skills to live independently and gain employment.
The McDowell Center serves residential and day students and includes a dormitory wing, classrooms, a computer room, auditorium, and recreation and exercise areas. The center also offers virtual classes for off-site students. The residential part of the center closed in March 2020 because of the COVID pandemic. Since that time, the center has repaired the plumbing and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and renovated and updated the dorm space to enhance comfort and safety features for consumers.
The center is operated by the Kentucky Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, an agency of the Education and Labor Cabinet. The 29-year-old facility is the only training center in Kentucky for adults who have been significantly impacted by vision loss.
