Members of Brandenburg City Council met during their regular meeting Monday (2/10) night gaining perspective on the city’s finances.
The council heard the presentation of the city’s 2023-2024 audit report. CPA Sammie Lee, presented a clean audit of the city’s finances and explained several sections of how the city government’s finances are structured along with how the number appears much larger than actual available funds when all of the infrastructure is factored into the budget. After the presentation, the council unanimously approved the audit report.
In other business, the council approved a resolution supporting the Kentucky League of Cities and other city governments, who oppose the recent filling of House Bill 253, which would allow the state to centralize the collection occupational taxes. The resolution of opposition to the measure comes as the Brandenburg City Council currently has a tabled proposal of a occupational tax that is being considered by city leaders. The council approved the resolution. Mayor David Pace said he was working to organize a work session for the council to discuss information from the committee related to the tabled proposals of the occupational license fee and restaurant tax in the city. No exact dates were announced but are expected toward the end of February to allow council members to possibly take action during the regular March meeting.
City Clerk Amy Haynes explained recent issues during the past month related to late city utility bills. She said that the recent problems with the postal service resulted in water bills arriving late to the customers and prompting late notices. Haynes said the waters bills are due by the 15th of each month to allow processing of payments. She said several payments options are available on the city’s website.
Mayor Pace announced to the council that plans for the new water tower will submitted to the Kentucky Division of Water. The tower will be built on Mooreman Road near the cell tower and will help with water pressure issues on the eastern side of town and supply water to Nucor and the surrounding area. The city has already been granted a $1.5 million grant through the Lincoln Trail Area Development District. Once approved by the state, the bids will be sought on the project with construction to begin this summer.
Police Chief Brian Hagg introduced Officer James House, who graduated from the Department of Criminal Justice in Richmond on Thursday. The council formed the Yard of The Month committee, which consists of Council members Grant Wiles, Rhonda Allen and Mark Spry.
