The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a scam involving legal documents sent to homes.
The documents threaten immediate arrest for missing jury duty with the possibility of being in contempt of court or being fined thousands of dollars.
If you happen to receive these papers, verify the document and see if it has any court names like the “Supreme Court” or nonexistent “Superior Court of the United States” on the document. If it does, it is a fake notice.
Police will never call or text you and will never demand payments over the phone or via wire transfer.
If you are contacted, do not share any personal information like your social security number or banking details.
Hang up immediately and call a local law enforcement agency to report the call instead.
