
Kentucky State Police is investigating after a double homicide occurred in Rowan County on Friday.
Shortly after 10:15 a.m. EDT, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare check at a residence on South Spring Street in Morehead. The deputies discovered 37-year-old Kayla D. Blake and Blake’s 13-year-old daughter Kennedi McWhorter, dead inside the home.
Kentucky State Police Post 8 was requested to investigate. Their initial investigation determined that the suspect was 44-year-old Joshua W. Cottrell of Morehead, Kentucky.
Kentucky State Police Post 1 troopers and local law enforcement agencies located Cottrell at a Paducah area hospital later that afternoon. He was treated, released and charged with two counts of Murder and one count of Tampering with Physical Evidence. Cottrell is lodged at the McCracken County Jail under a $1 million cash bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on September 24.
The investigation remains ongoing.
