Former Louisville Metro Police officer Brett Hankison has been ordered to report to prison on October 9 to serve his 33-month prison sentence for his role in the botched raid that ended the life of Breonna Taylor.
On Friday, October 3, attorneys for Hankison filed a motion to extend his report date by 60 to 90 days. The motion said the additional time was requested so the court can rule on the motion for Hankison’s bond and so there is time to present that motion to the Sixth Circuit if necessary.
The judge has not yet ruled on this motion.
Hankison was found guilty of using excessive force and violating Breonna Taylor’s civil rights on November 2, 2024. He is so far the first and only officer convicted in the deadly raid. On July 21, he was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison.
On August 28, Hankison’s attorneys filed a motion, asking for him to remain free as he appeals his sentence and conviction. The U.S. Department of Justice, which initially requested that Hankison not receive prison time in his sentencing, is not opposing Hankison staying out of jail under the same conditions of bond previously set pending his appeal, according to court documents.
