A Rowan County man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after pleading guilty to the brutal stabbing deaths of a mother and her teenage daughter inside their home.
Joshua Cottrell admitted to killing 37-year-old Kayla Blake and her 13-year-old daughter, Kennedi McWhorter, in Morehead in September 2025.
The victims were discovered after a welfare check at their home on Spring Street. Investigators later arrested Cottrell in Paducah, where authorities said he had blood on his clothing.
Cottrell, who was Blake’s boyfriend and lived with her, initially pleaded not guilty but changed his plea during a recent court hearing.
Circuit Judge Elizabeth Davis sentenced Cottrell to two life terms without the possibility of parole, plus five years for tampering with physical evidence.
