The family of the woman who was picked up by a Louisville Metro garbage truck and crushed has filed a wrongful death lawsuit.
On February 12, 2026, Tyrah Adams was unhoused and sleeping in an alley covered under blankets in the area of 26th Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard, as crews were doing a routine cleaning.
During the cleaning, Adams is believed to have been picked up and compressed by the truck’s claw before dropping her to the ground. Adams was then taken to UofL Hospital, where she eventually died from her injuries.
Following the incident, the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office ruled Adams’ cause of death as blunt force and compressional trauma.
The family’s attorney, Stephanie Rivas, previously said that witnesses, not the metro workers, called 911 to get help for Adams.
Rivas said this litigation is about accountability, transparency, and preservation of evidence. Through the legal process, the Estate intends to obtain and review all relevant materials, including the videos obtained of the incident itself.
The lawsuit is officially filed against the Louisville Metro Government, Louisville Metro Public Works, and the metro workers involved in the incident.
