Specialty courts that focus on treatment and supervision for people whose criminal behavior is tied to addiction or mental illness face an uncertain future.
House Bill 504, which passed on April 14, cuts funding to the state’s Judicial Branch.
The cuts leave Chief Justice Debra Hembree Lambert making decisions regarding funding for core judicial functions versus programs not required by the constitution, which includes specialty courts.
Specialty courts are still operating in all 120 Kentucky counties.
The Chief Justice is working out a reorganization plan. The specifics of that plan will not be available until the new fiscal year, which begins July 1.
