Ohio County Sheriff’s Office officials say a man is in jail after nearly hitting deputies while driving.
Deputies were conducting a traffic safety checkpoint near the intersection of Longview Church Lane and U.S. Highway 62 East on Tuesday.
Officials say shortly after deputies became operational, a vehicle approached the checkpoint and disregarded deputies’ signals to stop.
The driver, later identified as 28-year-old Stephon Wilson, continued through the checkpoint, nearly hitting two deputies before driving westbound toward Beaver Dam.
Beaver Dam Police officers, who had the intersection of U.S. Highway 231 and U.S. Highway 62 East secured, attempted to stop the vehicle.
They say Wilson continued to flee, traveling approximately 91 mph in a 35 mph-zone.
Officials say the vehicle then turned south onto U.S. Highway 231 before entering the Walmart parking lot, where the driver extinguished the vehicle’s lights and ran away on foot.
Following a brief chase through a nearby bean field across from Dairy Queen, deputies apprehended Wilson without further incident.
He was booked into the Ohio County Detention Center and faces the following charges:

Wanton Endangerment, First Degree (Police Officer)
Fleeing or Evading Police, First Degree (Motor Vehicle)
Speeding 26 MPH or Greater Over the Speed Limit
