The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating multiple thefts involving Kinetic communications wire throughout the county.
According to the sheriff’s office, they have received numerous complaints over the past several weeks where communications lines have been cut, damaged and/or removed. The thefts have caused significant property damage and have the potential to disrupt communication services for residents, businesses, and emergency response systems.
Law enforcement has been working with Kinetic representatives, local scrap yards, and other law enforcement partners to identity the persons involved in the theft and sale of the stolen wire.
During the investigation, deputies developed information that stolen communications wire was being stripped and sold as scrap copper which led to a suspect being interviewed. During the interview, investigators were able to link the suspect to multiple incidents involving the theft, transportation, stripping, and sale of the stolen wire.
The man was arrested and charged with Theft By Unlawful Taking over $10,000.00, Criminal Mischief 1st Degree, and Interfering with Communications. The suspect was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.
As the investigation continues, other suspects are likely to be charged and arrested.
The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to report any suspicious activity involving:
Individuals cutting or removing communications wire
Vehicles parked near utility poles or communications lines, particularly during late evening or overnight hours
Persons loading large quantities of wire into vehicles
Individuals stripping wire or attempting to sell large quantities of scrap copper
Open burning that produces heavy black smoke, as investigators believe stolen wire may be burned to remove its plastic coating before being sold
