A lithium-ion battery tossed in with recyclables sparked a fire Friday morning at Rumpke’s recycling facility on West Oak Street, according to the company.
Workers spotted a smoldering cardboard bale after it came out of the baler, safely took it apart and found the battery inside.
No one was hurt.
Rumpke safety manager Bridgett Bigg urged residents not to put rechargeable batteries in trash or recycling bins, warning they can ignite within seconds when crushed. Instead, take them to a designated battery drop-off site which can be found at www.batterysafetynow.org.
