The Bardstown Police Department is advising drivers about changes to Kentucky’s “fleeing and evading” law that increase penalties for people who run from police during traffic stops.
Police said fleeing and evading in the first degree has been increased from a Class D felony to a Class C felony, which can carry 5 to 10 years in prison. Fleeing and evading in the second degree has been increased from a Class A misdemeanor to a Class D felony, punishable by 1 to 5 years in prison, according to the department.
The department said anyone convicted of either offense must serve at least half of their sentence before being eligible for probation or parole and that probation or diversion is not available.
Bardstown police urged drivers to pull over safely when they see emergency lights and address any concerns through the legal process afterward.
