Two Grayson County firefighters were injured while attempting to extinguish a housefire on Tuesday, July 21.
At approximately 9:10 p.m., the East Grayson, Clarkson, Wax, and Leitchfield Fire Departments, Grayson County Emergency Management, and the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office all responded to a reported fire in the 1100 block of Lacon Skaggs Road after the home’s basement was engulfed in flames.
One firefighter was seriously injured when a set of stairs he was climbing suddenly collapsed and he fell several feet.
The other injured firefighter was overwhelmed by the heat.
Both firefighters were transported by EMS to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center. The firefighter that was overwhelmed by heat was treated and kept overnight for observations. The firefighter that fell through the stairs was transported to a hospital in Louisville.
The basement was already entirely swallowed in flames when officials arrived on the scene. Despite the departments’ best efforts, the fire spread throughout both stories of the home. They fought the fire multiple hours, as the last firefighter to leave the scene departed around 2 a.m. Wednesday morning.
