Actions by an off-duty corrections officer helped save a man’s life last week after the officer intervened to stop a knife attack in the Russell neighborhood.
On Wednesday, August 5, an off-duty corrections officer was sitting on his front porch when he witnessed 65-year-old Reese J. Greer chasing another man down the sidewalk. Arrest records show Greer was waving two large knives while allegedly making slashing motions at the victim.
The officer drew his personal firearm and ordered Greer to drop the knives. Greer complied and was held by the officer until Louisville Metro Police arrived.
According to the arresting officers, before the off-duty officer’s actions, Greer was swinging both knives at the victim from a distance described as one or two arm lengths, creating a severe risk of injury or death as the victim attempted to flee.
The victim told police the corrections officer “saved his life.”
Witnesses told police Greer had been drinking and acting verbally aggressive toward the victim before the attack.
While in handcuffs, Greer reportedly continued verbal threats against the victim, saying that he would kill him.
Greer is being charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, a felony, and third-degree terroristic threatening.
He was arraigned in court on Friday, August 7, and is being held on a $25,000 cash bond with an additional $2500 bond. The court issued strict no-contact conditions. He is also barred from possessing firearms or other weapons.
A preliminary hearing in the case will be held on August 17.
