Kentucky State Police Post 4 responded to a report to a two-vehicle collision involving a rollover crash on near the 87-mile marker of southbound Interstate 65 in Hardin County just after 2 p.m. on Friday, August 14.
The caller reported that one vehicle had overturned and that a family was trapped inside the vehicle, which was smoking.
Trooper Blaine Miller was in the area responding to an unrelated incident and arrived on scene almost immediately. Upon arrival, Trooper Miller observed the overturned vehicle with four occupants trapped inside. The vehicle was smoking and beginning to catch fire.
Trooper Miller breached the front windshield of the vehicle, climbed inside, and assisted in removing all four occupants from the vehicle to safety. The occupants were identified as 28 year-old Samantha Bloom, 22 year-old Joshua Bloom, 26 year-old Sarah Bloom and 24 year-old Savannah Bloom, all of Louisville.
Preliminary investigation indicates a tractor-trailer, operated by Steven Hawkins of Munfordville, was traveling southbound on Interstate 65 when it merged from the middle lane into the right lane near the 87-mile marker. The tractor-trailer forced a 2013 Honda CRV, being operated by Savannah Bloom, off the right shoulder of the roadway. The Honda CRV then began to roll, overturning several times before coming to final rest on its side.
All four occupants of the Honda CRV sustained minor injuries and were transported to Baptist Health Hardin in Elizabethtown where they were treated and released. The operator of the tractor trailer was not injured and declined EMS.
Kentucky State Police was assisted at the scene by Hardin County Sheriff’s Office, Hardin County EMS, Glendale Fire Department, Central Hardin Fire Department and Elizabethtown Fire Department.
