Kentucky State Police are searching for a Louisville tow truck driver who fled the scene of a fatal two-vehicle collision in Bullitt County early Saturday morning.
Kentucky State Police troopers responded to the crash on I-65 northbound near the 112-mile marker just south of Shepherdsville shortly before midnight on Friday, August 14.
According to a preliminary Kentucky State Police investigation, 34 year-old Luis Gonzalez Perez, of Louisville, was operating a tow truck hooked to a bobtail semi-tractor parked on the shoulder. Because the wrecker was facing southbound to hook the tractor, Perez attempted to execute a U-turn across all three northbound lanes of I-65 trying to head north.
During the turn, the tow truck was struck by a 2007 Ford Focus, driven by 43 year-old Shawn Franklin of North Carolina.
Franklin sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to UofL Hospital for treatment but was later pronounced dead by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
Perez was not injured in the collision but fled before officers arrived.
Both Kentucky State Police and local law enforcement agencies are actively searching for him.
Kentucky State Police confirms that charges against Perez are pending and will be handled through the Bullitt County Attorney’s Office.
Crash reconstruction and the investigation are ongoing.
