A Louisville man is facing multiple felony charges after he allegedly attacked a pregnant woman, resulting in a ruptured placenta, liver laceration, and an emergency C-section.
Desmond Potts, 31, was arrested Friday, August 21, and is being charged with first-degree assault (domestic violence), first-degree unlawful imprisonment, first-degree wanton endangerment, fourth-degree assault (child abuse), third-degree terroristic threatening, and menacing.
Court records say that the incident began as a verbal altercation at a Louisville residence on August 20. Potts allegedly pushed his forehead into that of the victim. When she tried to push him away, Potts reportedly grabbed her, slamming her onto her back on a couch. The victim was 31 weeks pregnant with twins.
A 9-year-old child jumped on Potts’ back in an attempt to protect the victim. Potts allegedly flung the child off.
When the victim attempted to gather her belongings to leave, a report says that Potts took her phone and keys, pulling the victim back inside, and drew a knife.
According to the report, Potts then pinned the victim against a wall and held the knife to her stomach, threatening to kill her and her unborn children.
When the 9-year-old intervened again, Potts allegedly grabbed the child by the neck and pinned him against a wall.
Court documents state the physical violence escalated further as Potts dragged the victim into the living room, slammed her onto the floor, and later dragged her by the leg out of the apartment and down a flight of stairs. Potts also grabbed the 9-year-old by the back of his neck and pinned him against a wall a second time.
A neighbor intervened by calling the police during the altercation, but the victim had fled back to her own residence with her children before officers arrived.
Upon arriving home, the victim fainted and was rushed to UofL Hospital.
A medical examination revealed that she had sustained a serious liver laceration and a ruptured placenta, which made it necessary to perform a C-section to deliver the twin babies. The 9-year-old child also complained of neck pain following the assault.
Potts was arraigned on Saturday, August 22. His bond was set at $100,000 cash. He was also served with a restraining order and placed on home incarceration program (HIP) restrictions if bond is posted.
Potts’ preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 31.
