Churchill Downs wants the Breeders’ Cup back under the Twin Spires.
The world’s most famous horse track is preparing its application to host the sport’s annual World Championships in 2018.
Churchill last hosted the Breeders’ Cup in 2010 and 2011. It was supremely successful then in terms of attendance and pairmutuel wagering.
Lexington’s Keeneland is hosting this year’s event, which will take place next weekend. After that, the Cup heads to California for the next two years. Santa Anita Park will host the event November 4-5 in 2016 before the Cup goes to Del Mar November 3-4 in 2017.
John Asher, Churchill’s vice president of communications, said work on the application is being done right now for 2018, which is the next available open date.
Churchill has hosted the Breeders’ Cup eight times, which currently ties it with Santa Anita for the most.
