A state representative from Western Kentucky is calling for better safety measures on school buses.
Representative Jim DeCesare, a Republican from Bowling Green/District 17, has filed a bill that would provide more training for drivers and materials to raise awareness of the danger with young students.
The bill comes after a kindergartener in Butler County was killed. The 5-year-old was hit by the bus as it pulled away, right after dropping him off at his grandmother’s house.
The bill will be considered when lawmakers head back to work in early January.
Earlier this week a top U.S. safety official called for seat belts in school buses.
In a speech Monday, the head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Mark Rosekind, said data shows safety belts on buses would reduce injuries and save lives.
Rosekind says the agency will use every tool at its disposal to get three-point seat belts in all of the nation’s school buses and will launch a series of steps including new research, funding and a nationwide mandate.
