Police say an Elizabethtown man prowling for children has been stopped before he was able to attack.
Elizabethtown police say the suspect, 37 year-old Edward Shane Sparks walked around a neighborhood near Greenway Drive and Valley Creek Road looking for yards with toys and knocked on their doors. According to police, Sparks later said he was looking for a 10 to 12 year old child to sexually abuse.
One person did call police about Sparks, but they couldn’t locate him and left, hoping to later match his description.
Police say Sparks walked to a nearby park and ride where a school bus monitor leaves her car. First, he tried to get into the bus monitor’s car. The bus driver was watching to make sure the bus monitor was able to leave safely. Then Sparks walked up to the school bus and pecked on the door. The driver did not open the door but radioed back to the district for someone to call the police. The bus did not have any students onboard at the time of the incident.
With the help of the bus driver, police found Sparks nearby. That’s when they say he admitted his sinister intentions.
Sparks was initially taken to Communicare to be mentally cleared. Once it was determined his demeanor was more closely associated with drugs, he was taken to Hardin Memorial Hospital. Once at the hospital, police say Sparks exposed himself to staff and the officers.
Sparks is now charged with indecent exposure and attempted rape because police say he fell under the criteria of having ability, desire and opportunity to commit a crime.
Police say this is not the first time they have dealt with the suspect for indecent exposure.
