The Monroe County Jail will close at the end of this month after a 5-1 vote by the Monroe County Fiscal Court.
County officials said they could not meet new state guidelines requiring more people to be on staff.
Inmates that would have gone to the Monroe County Jail, will now go to the Barren County Jail in Glasgow, and it will cost Monroe County about $36 per day for each inmate.
The current cost to run the jail is about $684,000, the new projected cost of sending inmates to Barren County is $378,000 totaling about a $306,000 savings and avoiding potential legal issues.
For now, the 18 bed jail will close, but the county can re-open it later down the road if they choose to do so.
Judge-Executive Tommy Willett said Jailer Doyle Fox will still remain in his post and will be in charge of organizing people to transport inmates.
